Russian Bomb, 500 kg Chemical, KHAB-500

Description

These bombs are used to produce personnel casualties, and for area denial and enemy harassment. Chemical agents used in Soviet chemical bombs are persistent or nonpersistent. The filler constitutes about 50 to 60 percent of the total weight of most of these bombs.

These bombs have nose fuzes, except the spherical bombs, which are not fuzed. Some fuzes are armed by vane rotation and others when a pin is pulled. Some use a mechanical timer or a powder-train time delay to produce an airburst; others fire on impact. Bombs without fuzes are designed to rupture on impact, scattering their filler.

The bomb is painted gray with a red nose band and a green body band if a persistent filler is used. If a non-persistent filler is used the nose band will be green.
